Everyone is trying to guess who it will be. Are we talking about a traditionally masculine character wearing a big flowing cape? Or will it be a captivating heroine who steals our hearts with her honest portrayal of lesbian love. The rumor mill is churning, and the buzz is definitely bi-curious. DC Comics is coming OUT with a gay character, and we are super-hero excited.
Why haven’t there been any OUT comic book characters before now? Truth be told, there have been a number of “maybe-gay” cops, robbers and villains throughout the years. LGBT themes were voiced earlier in underground comix from the 1970s until now. Comic books included subtext and innuendo when they couldn’t be bold-faced gay. Now it’s full steam ahead, let’s get homo happy with Batman and Robin, if you know what I mean.
Who’s really worried, the kids or the parents? Historically, gay characters were omitted intentionally because of censorship or the perception that comics were for children. Of course, the consensus now among the gay community is that the earlier kids learn about equality, the better. Comics are no different, they still play a major role in our kids lives and now they can finally represent everyone.
How fun! Now we get to pick out even better costumes. Will our power player wear rainbows or pink tights? We hope so. Sparkles would be great, glowing boots would be even better. Fun wigs, extravagant makeup and chaps. Or, if we’re going a little more lez, maybe a classy suit with Prada heels. We just hope there is a jet pack somewhere in the mix.
What does this mean for the future of comics? Will the other characters be friendly or do we need gay-friendly training? This is a whole new world, a great beginning for an age-old past time. It brings to mind other favorites, possibly gay baseball cards or transgendered toys. I’m just thinking ahead here, knowing that now we are on the right track.
So DC Comics, welcome to the 21st century. You are now officially in our we-love-you book, along with our ideas for some fab futuristic super heroes. Stay tuned for more! This is Straighty Says, and I’ll shoot it to you straight!

So you thought Austin was straight-up Straight? Gayborhood is invading this Texas town in a big way, and we’re pumped that the city is even gayer than we imagined.
Gayborhood’s own Dusty Wenk can definitely see a unique atmosphere in Austin. Having lived in LA and Atlanta, she compares the laid-back lifestyle against the hustle and bustle of the larger cities. “What I would say is the most amazing thing here is that you can do what you want but you simply cannot get into a bad mood, because as soon as you leave the house you see people smiling at you everywhere,” remarks Dusty. “I can't really explain it, but there is such a calmness, such a peace. It just gets you right away.” Commenting on the population itself, Dusty notes, “People are very very open minded here and they care about the environment, there are uncountable places where you can let your dog run free and all the good stuff.” We’re thrilled to hear it.
The first places we ventured into were the local watering holes. We were ready to introduce the app and party in true Gayborhood style, so we went to the gayest places we could find. Lipstick 24, Rusty’s, and Rain on 4th welcomed us with a festive celebration. Next year we’ll be ready for SXSW, the yearly music festival that tailors to singer/songwriters. The events for the gay community are endless, the crowds are friendly, and the heat is, well, hot. But as they say, if you can’t take the heat, get out of Austin!
The Austin Party Page - is another resource we found to keep the party going. We‘re ready for more!
Wow! Austin has a lot to offer the gay community.
Austin Chronicle - Gay Texas Fun Guide
and since Austin is close to the border...
Austin Latino/Latina Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Organization (ALLGO) - Advocates social change and preserving queer Latina/o culture and art. Includes calendar of events, volunteer and job opportunities, and membership information.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. To say the least, Gayborhood is super excited to finally be Texans. We know that we’ve found a home, now we’re ready to enjoy it to the fullest! This is Straighty Says, and I’ll shoot it to you straight!

Where do straighties get their gay-friendly info? We'll start with friends.
* Friends - Those who don’t know much about the gay community are inclined to ask their friends, hoping to get a straight answer. Friends are less likely to shy away from the questions. Do friends always have the right answer? Sometimes I am pretty sure they are making it up. Other times they may be dead accurate. That’s when I Google it and find out if they are, um, right. It also depends on your circle of friends. Are they gay savvy? Do they stay on top of current trends and LGBTQ news? Find out their breadth of knowledge then ask away!
* Family - If a straight person asks other straight members of their family, the answer will depend on how open that family is with each other. They may also have some god-awful answers if they are trying to break it to you gently or if they don’t have a clue. My family is very unfamiliar with the LGBTQ community. They answer my questions in a whisper. Now it is my turn to educate them! Don’t be afraid to give your own opinion and “school” your loved ones.
Internet - There are tons of websites, everything from gay fashion to gay travel and any other gay-friendly thing you can think of. You just have to know where to look. I’ve found gay-straight alliances and gay-friendly clubs around the country. About.com has a “gay life” section. The resources are unlimited, but you have to weed through some interesting junk to get to the real deal. Again, Google will tell you anything you need to know.
News - It Gets Better videos are a huge deal right now. Sports figures and school kids all around the globe are coming out in a big way. They’re creating videos that encourage other gays, reminding them that it gets better with time. Advocate.com and PInk News are news sources that bring you political issues, entertainment scoop and everything in between. The GLAAD awards are in the spotlight now (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), bringing together gay celebrities and the straighties that support them. Other celebrities are pulling their weight, such as the Give a Damn campaign by Cindy Lauper. This is a great one for straighties, who are encouraged with facts, resources and lots of other great tidbits. Its worth a look!
* Other gays - Here’s the info straight from the horses mouth. Sometimes I have to be a little bold and just ask what’s on my mind. Luckily, the gay community is open and willing to share their thoughts. My gay friends will tell me anything! They also give me their opinions on the straighties, so I get both sides of the coin. Reflection is key. If I really want to know something about the gay and lesbian scene, this is where I start. Just don’t be afraid to ask. Most likely you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
