When video games became all the rage in the 80s, we all loved Super Mario Brothers immediately. Tetris was amazing and Duck Hunt was revolutionary. Were games gay back in the day? The gaming industry is one place where role play and virtual reality have opened the doors for “gay-mers”. Characters have become increasingly more gay and there are websites dedicated to the lesbian gaming enthusiast. 20 years ago you could find a few gay references and one Japanese version of mortal combat that was homo happy. So what’s out there today that caters to the LGBTQs? Let’s go digital with “The Sims”, for starters.
Sims 3 is where the going gets gay. With your self-generated character you can do everything you want to do in your real life...meet guys/gals, get back rubs, make out, get married, have sex and, of course, adopt a baby. All in gay fashion.
From the popular “That’s Gay” video blog, we learn that "Fable," "Dragon Age," "Bully," and "Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony" are also up to date with their character selection. Each one has the option of going gay, some with the option of being human or not. “Dragon Age Origins” - engages in love making between man and male elf. “Fable” gives you the option to have unprotected gay sex. Quite a leap from the supposed bisexuality of Luigi. Of course, it was only rumored.
Who are the most popular gay characters? GayGamer.net gives us the top 5 gayest video game characters with my favorite being the Drag Queens and their Bust-A-Groove moves:
- April Ryan, the protagonist in The Longest Journey - apparently straight but very comfortable with the homosexuality around her.
- Drag Queens Bust Out in Bust-A-Groove: Dance Summit 2001
- Michael Doi in Bust-A-Groove 2
- Tommy – Indigo Prophecy
- Makoto – Enchanted Arms - From the website: “Makoto is openly gay and his friends like to call him “yellow otomegokoro.”
So what’s in it for the ladies? You know the girls aren’t going to be left out just because the industry has been predominantly male. Lesbians love to play, and the female video games and themes are out there too. Girls are organizing and, if you ask me, they’ve got the edge when it comes to graphics and website cohesion. Girl power! Girl power!
LesbianGamers.com is stocked with categories such as Female Gaming, Game Reviews, Gay Girls Who Game, Competitions, Gaming News and Articles. Don’t forget their catchy tagline, “Because Sometimes We Use Our Hands For Other Things”. This website is beautiful to boot. http://lesbiangamers.com/
AfterEllen.com sets out to bring us the best examples of lesbian characters out there. "Fear Effect" on the PS1 had a lesbian couple in it. Vampire: Bloodlines features girls luring other girls into the dark corner to suck their blood. Baldur's Gate allows you to have a romance with a woman (as a man) and then put on a magic girdle that makes you into a woman. And for those who want more resources for women, visit WomenInGames.com. http://www.afterellen.com/node/3959
In all, the gayness is spreading through the market like wildfire. Gay-mers can find a character that suits their interests or create their own in virtual reality. And who says that gay can’t go digital?

Gay lingo, sometimes called gayspeak, has boomed over the last few decades. In previous years, gay slang was used as code to secretly talk about being homosexual. All of this has come full circle, however, and now the terminology is used to refer to just about everything gay. It is typically used among the LGBTQ community, but I have a few tricks that can help even the straightest of us fit in to the conversation.
For starters, just the word “gay” has a number of applications.
gay - 1. happy 2. homosexual
</gay> - computer language for stop being gay
(gay) - denotes someone who is obviously gay but still in the closet
gay* - the politically correct way to say that something is characterized by bad features. does not refer to homosexuality
[GAY] - Go Away You.
G-A-Y - A club on Old Compton Street in Soho, London. Great atmosphere if you are into dancing, it has a gay scene but anyone can go.
G.A.Y. - abbreviation meaning Good At Yoga
You would be amazed at the number of gay slang terms that one can find out there. What is a Gay-Lesbian? How can something be gaylicious? And is there really such a thing as Gaylight-savings time? UrbanDictionary.com is stacked with hundreds, maybe thousands, of terms and definitions. Here are just a few of my faves.
Gay-Lesbian Actually straight. A humorous play on words. If a man is gay and a lesbian, then he is straight.
Gaylibi When a homosexual intentionally refers to a past lover of the opposite sex in order to conceal their gayness.
Gaylienate The ignorant act of alienating someone for being gay or taking sides with a gay person.
Gay light savings time The extra time alloted to a gay man for being fashionably late. Usually fifteen minutes.
gayligious Meaning someone who is gay and religious.
Gayliner Sometimes referred to as “guy-liner”, gayliner is the extreme use of eyeliner by a homosexual to accentuate ones eyes.
Gaylingual Fluent when speaking with gays, mastery of the gay culture.
gay mafia Informal grouping of rich, powerful gays & lesbians in Hollywood who all seem to know each other
A few more gay terms for the record? “Heyyyyyy” is the gay mans word for “hello”. The gayer the man, the more “y’s” at the end of the word. Gay-lights are hilights in a guys hair that no straight man would be caught with. A troll is someone much older who wants to go home with you and a twit is someone younger than you that won’t respond to your advances.
If you want to become gaylingual, study up straighties. The list of gay terms can be daunting, but the more you know the more you’ll be able to follow along! Learning the lingo is a little like learning a new language. With a little practice anyone can learn gayspeak!

Dating is a crazy thing to watch. Which stage of dating is the most fun? When do you commit? How do you handle the breakup if things just don’t go well? Relationships are tricky, no matter what the dynamic. But understanding the hot topics and how-to tips can make the ride a little less bumpy. Oh, and one last question... Can two girls or guys go out on a “straight date” if one person is gay? Straighty takes a look!
Hook ups vs. dating
When it comes to finding the right match, there are lots of ways to let the cat out of the bag. Are you in it for dating or just hooking up? Online dating sites, for example, give you the option of using your title to state whether you are serious or looking for a short romance. “InItForLoveJake29” or “JustForTonightOklahoma” are sure ways to set the tone.
If you aren’t interested in one night stands, be sure to avoid hook up hot-spots and try to do a little more research on your date before the big night. Dig a little deeper and you’re likely to find out what this guy or gal thinks about the perfect date.
Friends with benefits
FWB is a great concept in theory and filled with the promise of plenty. It can certainly work with the right amount of honesty and acceptance. However, it can also be difficult to find two people who are at the same place in their expectations. This is sometimes the way to go, nonetheless, for those who are not ready to commit.
Going back to being “just friends”
No one wants to hear those words when they are happy in a relationship. But if that time comes, you can be prepared. Dave Singleton of match.com suggests that two people agree to be friendly, not necessarily friends. “Being friends implies more,” says Singleton. “Such as a certain commitment of time and energy. Also, it’s hard to gauge sincerity at this transitional time.”
Lesbian Love List
In particular, I learned that the best way to approach a woman is very similar in the straight and lesbian communities. Here is a tried and true method that works from LesbianLife.about.com:
- Compliment her
- Find something to talk about that she’s interested in
- Be Confident
- Be friendly and courteous
- Pay attention to how she reacts to you
- Don’t be pushy
- Offer something useful
- Have a female friend that comes along for support
- Congratulate yourself!

For men or women, the advice is the same. Go slow when it comes to building your relationship. It is shown that gay relationships tend to move faster that straight ones. The rule of thumb, however, is to remain patient while love unfolds. You might find that the person is just who you hoped they would be, or you might find that you would rather move on. Just give it the good old test of time and you’ll be happier in the long run.
Relationships - a few sites for review:
Here are a few tips that lean towards gay relationships in particular. Read more on eHow.com for ways to handle the gay dating scene.
Decide together if you and your partner are going to bring your relationship “out of the closet”. Either way, it is considered best to give your relationship some time before you publicly commit. Will your relationship be monogamous? Stick to your guns, whatever the decision. Then you’ll be more likely to be in a happy and healthy relationship.
So the last response is to the question of the week...”What’s the status of the date if it is a mostly-just-friends mix of gay/straight?” You can call it whatever you want. Maybe a ‘straight play date’ or a ‘gay night out with a straighty for entertainment’. Share tips with each other while you’re out. And mostly, just be yourself. It’s a sure way to save the date!
